I did it.  Finally did it.  I sucked it up, gathered all my shoes from three rooms throughout the house and lined them up in my living room.  This is the result.  Don’t mind Milo, he loves shoes too.  And yes, I do need lessons on how to properly use my fancy camera.  Any volunteers?

I started out with the goal of arranging them by style and color in pretty little lines.  I quickly started to have a mini panic attack.  Facing your demons head on is not easy my friends.  Laying out my addiction for all to see was overwhelming.  Admitting I may have a few too many pairs of shoes may not seem like a big deal to many, but it was a huge deal for me.  I may have gotten a little emotional and muttered things like “don’t judge me” and “I don’t want to get rid of my friends, we have such memories” and “stop staring at me with your mouth open, you married me!” to my incredulous husband.  Not to mention bending to pick up each pair of shoes and put them down and move them around and then bending to pick them back up and bending to put them back down meant I did several hundred squats.  Sad to say that my thighs still hurt from it days later.

So, you want to  know the magic number?  The magic number is….

117 pairs

Yes, my friends, I own 117 pairs of shoes, or 234 individual shoes.  And I love them all.  Each and every pair.  They may not all be stylish and they may not all be comfortable, but they are mine.  They carried me to events, vacations, bumming around, to work, to school, on dates with my boyfriend who later became my husband and the father of the world’s most adorable baby girl.  They are there with me through weddings, birthdays, and funerals and one lucky pair got to walk right along next to my girl as she took her first steps.  So yes, I have a lot of shoes and yes, I will get rid of some of them.  But know that nothing about this process is easy.  But I trudge on wearing one of my fabulous 117 pairs of shoes.

Hello my pretties.  I hope you are all doing well.  Thanks again for your patience.  As a reward for your patience.  Here it is.  A huge deal.  Well, a huge deal to me at least.  I have accepted a throw down of sorts.  We are talking shoe challenge.

So lets start at the beginning.  My name is Rachel and I am a shoe addict.  I love to buy pretty shoes.  I have a collection.  A huge collection.  Not this nicely organized, but nonetheless, huge.

My family and most of my friends know about my little (O.K, big) problem.  Currently my shoes are spread throughout three closets.  Yes, three.  Who shows up to their birthday party with an adorable pair of shoes on her feet and a pair in her purse?  Oh, that would be me.

Several years ago when my husband and I lived in our first apartment together, we had a walk in closet.  I had my shoes artfully stored but he was beginning to discuss my addition with me.  I decided to donate some shoes.  I was so proud of myself as I cleaned out my collection and had a bag full of 14 pairs of shoes to donate.  14. PAIRS. OF. SHOES.  I hid the bag and had a huge smile on my face as I asked my husband to guess how many pairs I had gotten rid of.  He looked in our closet and replied, “I dunno, maybe two?”  That was a sign that I had a ton of shoes.

Fast forward to my surprise 30th birthday party.  My friend Shanon asked me how many pairs of shoes I have, how many I think I wear, etc.  Then came the throw down.  She challenged me to wear a different pair of shoes every day, take a picture, blog about them, and if I didn’t love them, get rid of them.  Well that challenge has morphed into this.  Here is how I am thinking this will play out.

I will wear a different pair of shoes, photograph said shoes and blog about it.  Most likely not one new pair daily like I hoped, as my feet grew 1/2 size when I was pregnant and if I am in some of these shoes all day, my feet may need time to recover.  I will aim for a minimum of 2 different pairs a week. I will take a photo of the shoes, give some description/back story and rate the shoes.  This will help us to figure out how many pairs of shoes I actually have.  It is like saying your weight out loud.  Scary concept for a lady.  So, if the shoes make me miserable, aren’t reasonably comfortable or I am not in love with them after the day, they are up for grabs.  I am not about to go delivering/mailing shoes, but if you live nearby and think the shoe that I will have to part ways with would be a great fit I will hang on to them for you.  It will be hard to part with some of these shoes, but I realize it is necessary.  There are a few pairs that I bought right before my pregnancy that are a smidge too tight, but are so gorgeous I don’t know what will happen at the end of the day I wear them.  Stay tuned and you can find out along with me!
